The Creative Journey I and II:
I will supply most of the materials needed for experimentation, but it is helpful if you arrive with some of the basics, such as:
– Sketchbook/Journal or notebook
-a container for water such as an ice cream bucket or plastic container
-Support* (for supporting watercolor paper)- can be a plywood or masonite board or a large clipboard (at least 9”x12”). If you do not have one, I will have some for you to use.
– Palette for mixing paints…If you do not have a palette, you can use any white plate or lid. It should be at least the size of a small dinner plate. I will have some available at the class for you to use.
– Saran Wrap* -one or two sheets (I will have extra if you do not have this)*
-Rubbing Alcohol*- I will supply this, but if you want to bring your own, put it in a small spray bottle.
-a roll of 1” masking tape OR four binder clips to keep paper attached on board
-Pencils for sketching/ a pen for journaling/ sharpener
– One fine tip permanent marker, such as a Sharpie
– Reference photos and sketches you may want to paint. If you can, please make a photocopies in black and white.* If you do not have photos, bring pictures from a magazine. I will also have extra photos.

Paper, Brushes, and Paint:
Option A: For those who are new to watercolor painting:
Watercolor Sampler Kit will be for sale 30 minutes before the workshop begins. This will include Strathmore 400 Watercolor Paper, a folding palette, and a squirt of a variety of high quality watercolor paints. I will supply brushes for your use if you do not have any brushes. I have a limited number of brushes for sale.
Please arrive before the class to purchase this kit- between 8:30-9:00 a.m.
The cost will be $12.00 without a brush and $16.00 with a brush.
Option B: For those who have experience with watercolor and already have paints: Bring a variety of colors, but make sure you include at least one yellow, one red, and one blue tube of watercolor paint.
Paint Color Recommendations: (choose at least one from each group)
Yellow:
Cadmium Yellow Pale, Lemon Yellow, Aureolin, or Hansa Yellow
Blue:
French Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean, Manganese Hue, or Peacock Blue
Red:
Cadmium Red Light or Medium, Permanent Rose, or Alizarin Crimson
There are many brands of paint available for purchase. My favorite brands include:
Holbein, Winsor Newton, Daniel Smith (danielsmith.com), American Journey (cheapjoes.com), and Da Vinci.
Brushes:
I suggest having a few round brushes sizes 4, 6, 8, 10 and a 1” flat brush. For this workshop, bring a variety of large and small brushes, whatever you have. I will have some “loaners” available.
Paper:
I recommend Arches or Fabriano 140 lb. Cold Press watercolor paper. I will be supplying small sample papers (Strathmore 400) for our experiments. There will be paper available to purchase from the Red Door Art Gallery. Paper comes in full sheets (30”x22”) or half sheets (15”x22”) or smaller. You can also purchase watercolor paper in pads or in “blocks” from art stores.
