You are invited to the Plains Art Museum Spring Gala!

Popeye and me at Gala auctionThis coming Saturday, May 7th, 2016, the Plains Art Museum is hosting its annual Spring Gala and Silent Art Auction. The 2016 Art Auction is fabulous and filled with great variety of work in a variety of mediums by a large group of artists.  This year I entered my bison piece, titled, Popeye, named after my dad, Johnny Benda. My dad was a member of the 1930 State Football Championship in North Dakota, earning the nickname of Popeye because he was a tough and determined lineman. This painting is a tribute to my dad, the NDSU Championship Football team, and the magnificent bison itself.  If you want to know more about the Gala and the Silent Art Auction, please go to: http://plainsart.org/exhibits/2016-spring-gala-art-auction/

Wahpeton’s Red Door Art Gallery hosts its first Rural Art Show

Springtime at the Ruddy FarmTravel 45 miles south of Fargo-Moorhead and you will find my treasured hometown of Wahpeton, North Dakota. I have many fond memories there and a little history, too. My grandfather, Frank Benda, owned the historical Opera House building, the Sears building, and the building that housed Benda’s Meat Market. My grandfather died before I was born and the Meat Market was lost to the depression; however, I grew up feeling proud of him because he was known for making the “best polish sausage around”. He would probably roll over in his grave if he knew I stopped eating beef and pork 39 years ago, but that is beside the point. As a result of his ownership of three buildings on Dakota Avenue, there is a large brick on one building that says, “BENDA BLOCK”. Across the street from this landmark is the quaint 1915 National Bank building which has been the home of the Red Door Art Gallery since 2012. It  features original works by Wahpeton-Breckenridge native Fritz Scholder and a variety of works by artists in a variety of mediums in response to the theme of “Rural”.  I have three paintings on display in this exhibit: Snowflake , Springtime at the Ruddy Farm (my aunt and uncle’s farm west of Wahpeton), and The Well House.  Please check out the gallery hours at http://www.reddoorgallerywahpeton.com/. It is worth the trip!

Do I need to count the strings?

Cellist playing Beethoven  Last Saturday, I was able to get out of the house and attend a free Beethoven concert at the Fargo Public Library. If I have my materials handy, I can sketch and listen to beautiful music at the same time. I use a thin Sharpie marker because it is quiet and doesn’t bother my neighbors as the sound of lead might do. I mostly scribble what I see and I don’t worry about accuracy….Do I need to know the exact number of strings on a cello? Is it important? Not to me.  What I noticed mostly is how this cellist bent his fingers in bizarre, strange ways to press the strings. I did about a dozen quick sketches then took them home and splashed some paint on them. This is what I love about sketching-free, easy, and it gives comfort to my inner being….Listening to Beethoven tunes at the same time…priceless.
