The Narrow Gate by Barbara Benda ©2022

The Narrow Gate by Barbara Benda, Acrylic on deep-edge canvas, 30″x30″,©2022, $1200. This painting was my entry for the 63rd Midwestern Art Exhibit at the Rourke Art Museum ,Moorhead, MN, in 2022. This painting responds to the theme of Familiar Lands and Foreign Gates: a Hero’s Journey. Whenever I hear the theme for the year, I go with my initial instinct for a painting. The word “gate” grabbed my attention and the Bible verse in Matthew 7:13-14 came to my mind. Out birding this spring, I had photographed a Golden-Crowned Kinglet wedged between branches at Forest River Park in Fargo. This image became the illustration of Matthew 7:13: “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.

This painting was inspired by a hot air balloon ride I took with a friend who took me for a ride over the farm fields near Hawley, Minnesota. At one point, he allowed  the balloon to descend and the basket swept through a soybean field. I wrote a poem about it:

Wicker basket floating over harvest fields,

The wind plans the trip for me.

Fire in the belly of the balloon supplies fuel to feed my soul.

Gliding through air,

Pressing into soybean fields so intimately, I picked a bean for my pocket.

Dipping into a pond, the water cleansed, refreshed me, then I lifted,

Drifting as one with the clouds, then was

            Gently cradled back to Earth.

He was a part of the 1930 State Championship Football Team from Wahpeton. His nickname was “Popeye” because he was tough lineman and “no one wanted to be across the line from Popeye”, as the story goes.

A Spiritual Woman

A Spiritual Woman, 16″x20″,Acrylic on deep-edge canvas, $385,  SOLD. This painting was created after a hospital stay in which a Certified Nursing Assistant ministered to me with Christian prayer. I believe it was no accident she was assigned to my room that night, coming from a hospital across town. I was in severe pain and no medicine was relieving my symptoms until she prayed over me after seeing a Bible in my hands. I welcomed her prayer and it was powerful. She was from Liberia. I had seen several Liberian women in church who dressed in colorful clothing, so I created this painting from my own memories with “Godlight” behind her. This painting was later sold to a nurse who saw it in a gallery and was drawn to it and asked me to tell her the story.

Leap of Faith

Leap of Faith, Acrylic on 100% Crescent Rag Board, 30″x22″, professionally framed with inner fillet around mat, $1200. SOLD. This painting expresses how the wonderful cross of Jesus Christ delivered me from depression due to a tough time in my life in which  I was falsely accused of things by one of my superiors and had to fight back or give up.  It caused me much angst and I took it all to the altar and was prayed over, and instantly released of my condition. It  gave me the power and strength to fight, going forward with the promise that He would never leave me or forsake me. This painting is about triumph over evil by depending on Jesus.

It’s a choice we all must make to accept or reject what He has done for all of us because of His love. John 3:16.

When I was there, people applauded when the sun rose as if we were witnessing a touchdown at a football game. Yes, let’s applaud the sun every day it rises!

Boss Bones, Digital Illustration on photo paper, image can be ordered in any size, price varies with size

This image started as a rough sketch of Wycliffe Gordon, a famous trombone player I saw in concert in Fargo. I scanned in my sketch, added sketches of other musicians that performed in various venues, and then used the software Corel Painter 11 and a Wacom drawing tablet and stylus to digitally illustrate this poster. Most of Wycliffe’s face is done with the airbrush and oil painting tools. I had a blast making this illustration, despite the hours of  work it consumed. I used the title of one of Gordon’s albums to title the image, “Boss Bones”.

This illustration was done for no commercial purpose at all; just for the fun of it!

Fresh Start, Watercolor, approx. 14″x11″, framed professionally, $300 SOLD

Nature motivates and inspires me.  The tiniest tree can spring up  from a teaspoon of soil packed tightly between rocks. This scene was totally made up in my mind, but is so real in my life. Everyone has an opportunity every day to have a fresh start in making positive change in his or her own life, sometimes just in being more genuine to the people around us.

Let nature inspire you to make a fresh start today, despite the lack of support, nutrients, or soil. Push through the rocks and believe in yourself.
